Sundown Audio Z-Series ZV6 18" 3250W Subwoofer Z v.6
The Z v.6 is the second step up in Sundown's "ultra-high excursion" subwoofer lineup after the X v.3 series and replaces the world-famous Z v.5 series. All models (10,12,15,18) feature our custom tooled and patented frames (US Patent Numbers D691596, D691597, D691598, and D741841). Sundown mates these new platform frames to a quad stacked 240mm (9.45”) diameter motor structure with a total magnet stack height of 100mm (3.94”) featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing over 4" p-p travel before mechanical bottom effectively making it bottomless). Compared to the X v.3 motor both the top & back plates are thicker allowing for even more magnetic strength and excursion potential. For the Z v.6 the top plate is another 5mm thicker than even the outgoing Z v.5 series! This motor drives a 3" diameter 8-Layer Flat Wire Aluminum Voice Coil wound on a thick aluminum former to incredible levels of excursion. The Z v.6 now uses the same voice coil as the NS v.5 series. The Z v.5 utilized a 4-layer voice coil – the change to an 8-layer was to answer our customers desire for higher motor force (more output) and it does just that! Based on Sundown's years of experience with the Z v.4 and Z v.5 series we've also improved the voice coil ventilation to be even more effective. The Z v.6 features a high-velocity pole vent, a heavily vented magnetic gap, and (all new for the v.6) machined channels in four places around the pole piece itself. The Z v.6 series was designed from the ground-up to become the new standard in the low-frequency / small ported box subwoofer category in this price range. They will work in the same small enclosures that are commonly used for for Sundown Audio's subwoofers, although, they can be used with enclosures up to about 50% larger than those if you desire even more low-end extension. Sundown Audio Sundown Audio U-Series v.1 10" Subwoofer
The Sundown U Series is our premier “standard suspension” woofer series. It is the most direct replacement for the world famous Z v.3 woofer line which we produced from 2011 to 2016 before launching the “new platform” Z v.4 series. Due to numerous advancements in our design process the U Series is able to deliver performance on-par with the Z v.3 series but at a much lower cost. We start with a double-stacked / 8.66” wide Y35 grade ferrite magnet system coupled to a one-piece, bumped T-Yoke and a 0.6” thick top-plate. Just as with the Z v.3 before it and our other high-end subwoofers we also add a very thick (5mm thickness) aluminum shorting ring inside the magnets to reduce static inductance and level out inductance over stroke. The U series motor also features a 0.6” long pole-extension to keep the coil under control at high levels of excursion. The voice coil is a 2.36” long / 3” diameter 4-layer aluminum winding / aluminum former unit – which is the same coil we use in our X v.2 series and, thus, the U series has the same 1500-watt RMS ratings. The coil temperature is kept in check by a heavily smoothed / high-velocity pole-vent and a series of ten direct air-gap vents in the back plate. The U series also features newly tooled cast aluminum vent rings in between the frame and top plate to effectively exchange air at a high velocity over the voice coil beneath the spider landing. The U series features an all-new cast aluminum frame series to the Sundown line which allows for taller cones than the older frames used on the Z v.3 series. The taller cones provide enhanced coil stability and increased mechanical excursion capability. We also tooled matching cast-aluminum surround clamps for the U series to ensure durability in the most demanding situations. The surrounds and cone bodies have been fully custom tooled especially for the U series and are stronger / support more excursion than the Z v.3 series cones and surrounds. The new cone bodies also feature an indentation for the same wide-flange, ultra-strong dust caps as our new platform subwoofers. The M series was built for intense bass with stellar low-frequency performance at industry-leading levels of low-distortion. It does this while looking amazing - with a new laser-etched back-plate design and special M-series magnet boot design. For the M-series we mate out Mega series frames to a quad stacked 200mm (7.87”) diameter motor structure with a total magnet stack height of 88mm (3.46”) featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing 59.5mm to mechanical bottom effectively making it bottomless - this is 4.68" peak-to-peak). At Sundown we always do things to the extreme so even our "entry" level M-series features a full 20mm thick top-plate to finish the efficient magnetic circuit. This coil is so massive that it allows even our M-series to achieve a full 35mm one-way linear excursion. We are truly setting a new industry standard with the M-series. Design Our philosophy with The Bass Blaster was to recreate the feel of car audio from our youth. The blue surround is not just our branding color, it is an homage to woofers of the 1990s that used brightly colored surrounds as a signature look. The balance of the blue to the grey/silver basket and cone harkens back to the early 2000s when some of our favorite woofer models sported a distinct style. The aluminum dust cap gives depth and texture to the woofer as a whole and adds rigid reinforcement to the cone body. The genesis of the design was the motor itself, the large vent for the four-inch coil caught our eye in car audio shops in the 1990s. Jacob Fuller captured that look while tapering the vent and adding a pole cap so as to not compromise modern cooling techniques for the best performance-to-aesthetics ratio possible. Topped off with the metal mesh over the magnet slugs, The Bass Blaster is the 90s/2000s woofer we all wish we had in our teens, but even better that we have it in our 40s.
