Sundown Audio Sundown Audio U-Series v.1 10" Subwoofer
The Sundown U Series is our premier “standard suspension” woofer series. It is the most direct replacement for the world famous Z v.3 woofer line which we produced from 2011 to 2016 before launching the “new platform” Z v.4 series. Due to numerous advancements in our design process the U Series is able to deliver performance on-par with the Z v.3 series but at a much lower cost. We start with a double-stacked / 8.66” wide Y35 grade ferrite magnet system coupled to a one-piece, bumped T-Yoke and a 0.6” thick top-plate. Just as with the Z v.3 before it and our other high-end subwoofers we also add a very thick (5mm thickness) aluminum shorting ring inside the magnets to reduce static inductance and level out inductance over stroke. The U series motor also features a 0.6” long pole-extension to keep the coil under control at high levels of excursion. The voice coil is a 2.36” long / 3” diameter 4-layer aluminum winding / aluminum former unit – which is the same coil we use in our X v.2 series and, thus, the U series has the same 1500-watt RMS ratings. The coil temperature is kept in check by a heavily smoothed / high-velocity pole-vent and a series of ten direct air-gap vents in the back plate. The U series also features newly tooled cast aluminum vent rings in between the frame and top plate to effectively exchange air at a high velocity over the voice coil beneath the spider landing. The U series features an all-new cast aluminum frame series to the Sundown line which allows for taller cones than the older frames used on the Z v.3 series. The taller cones provide enhanced coil stability and increased mechanical excursion capability. We also tooled matching cast-aluminum surround clamps for the U series to ensure durability in the most demanding situations. The surrounds and cone bodies have been fully custom tooled especially for the U series and are stronger / support more excursion than the Z v.3 series cones and surrounds. The new cone bodies also feature an indentation for the same wide-flange, ultra-strong dust caps as our new platform subwoofers. If you are looking for a woofer that sounds similar to the SA series but handles significantly more power… the U series is exactly what you need. The Z v.6 is the second step up in Sundown's "ultra-high excursion" subwoofer lineup after the X v.3 series and replaces the world-famous Z v.5 series. All models (10,12,15,18) feature our custom tooled and patented frames (US Patent Numbers D691596, D691597, D691598, and D741841).Sundown mates these new platform frames to a quad stacked 240mm (9.45”) diameter motor structure with a total magnet stack height of 100mm (3.94”) featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing over 4" p-p travel before mechanical bottom effectively making it bottomless). Compared to the X v.3 motor both the top & back plates are thicker allowing for even more magnetic strength and excursion potential. For the Z v.6 the top plate is another 5mm thicker than even the outgoing Z v.5 series!This motor drives a 3" diameter 8-Layer Flat Wire Aluminum Voice Coil wound on a thick aluminum former to incredible levels of excursion. The Z v.6 now uses the same voice coil as the NS v.5 series. The Z v.5 utilized a 4-layer voice coil – the change to an 8-layer was to answer our customers desire for higher motor force (more output) and it does just that!Based on Sundown's years of experience with the Z v.4 and Z v.5 series we've also improved the voice coil ventilation to be even more effective. We stuck with the 2.75” coil diameter and added another 5mm of length for additional linear x-max (22mm now). We are able to perfectly balance the mass, motor force, and suspension stiffness for the intended power level. Compared to the v.2 the v.3 features taller cones and wider spiders to enhanced linearity and coil stability to the next level. We also utilized full 3D FEA to further optimize the spider packs for this generation. The motor also features a large magnet shorting ring (faraday ring) & pole cap faraday ring to reduce distortion and deliver smoother response across the entire acoustic spectrum. With the v.3 upgrade we integrated a completely "locked-in" faraday ring that is physically held in place by the T-Yoke. The motor & coil setup is mated to an extremely robust multi-layer spider with fully tied-on & doubled-up “XL” tinsel leads. A competition-grade paper cone, strong foam surround, and custom-tooled aluminum frame (same frame as the bigger brother U v.2 series) are used to complete this masterpiece. On top of the ~22mm of one-way linear excursion we have an x-mech limit of 41mm one-way before coil bottom making it nearly "bottomless." The new motor was designed as a "little brother" to the U v.2 series so you will also note the updated venting system with a solid pole piece from the back and channeled pole on the inside.
