We stuck with the 2.75” coil diameter and added another 5mm of length for additional linear x-max (22mm now). We are able to perfectly balance the mass, motor force, and suspension stiffness for the intended power level. Compared to the v.2 the v.3 features taller cones and wider spiders to enhanced linearity and coil stability to the next level. We also utilized full 3D FEA to further optimize the spider packs for this generation. The motor also features a large magnet shorting ring (faraday ring) & pole cap faraday ring to reduce distortion and deliver smoother response across the entire acoustic spectrum. With the v.3 upgrade we integrated a completely "locked-in" faraday ring that is physically held in place by the T-Yoke. The motor & coil setup is mated to an extremely robust multi-layer spider with fully tied-on & doubled-up “XL” tinsel leads. A competition-grade paper cone, strong foam surround, and custom-tooled aluminum frame (same frame as the bigger brother U v.2 series) are used to complete this masterpiece. On top of the ~22mm of one-way linear excursion we have an x-mech limit of 41mm one-way before coil bottom making it nearly "bottomless." The new motor was designed as a "little brother" to the U v.2 series so you will also note the updated venting system with a solid pole piece from the back and channeled pole on the inside. When Sundown set out to design the "SA" series component they knew it had to be something special; something to uphold the reputation of the SA series subwoofer line. But at the same time the price had to remain reasonable; something that almost anyone can afford. The SA component set starts out with its custom designed midrange driver. The mid features a high quality cast aluminum basket as its starting point; where many speakers in this category go with cheaper stamped steel frames. The cone is a carefully selected blend of paper and wool fibers designed to damp any unwanted resonances. The dust cap is a soft poly whose size, shape, and material were all chosen to create the least amount of breakup and distortion as possible. The surround is a very compliant rubber that helps to tame any remaining edge resonances within the cone. With any midrange the cone, surround, and dust cap are CRITICAL to the sound. When designing the SA set we had no concern for fancy cosmetics or other "audio jewelry" The motor was FEA optimized in-house to increase linear excursion and features a full 6mm one-way linear excursion thanks to a carefully designed motor and extended pole piece. We also thoroughly considered thermal performance in the design with the SA mid featuring a vented magnetic gap and a vented voice coil collar. The 60-watt per side power rating on the SA mid is derived from a full 8-hour test on pink noise (full bandwidth down to 20 Hz) -- so when crossed over on the bottom-end this figure ends up being VERY conservative. Most customers use 100+ watt RMS amplifiers on the SA sets. The SA series tweeter had to match the smooth sound of the midrange so we went with a silk dome. We tested numerous versions, tweaked the gap, dome material, tested various lenses, various chamber damping materials, so on and so forth until arriving at the final design. As the response graph is proof of the result is an incredibly smooth sounding tweeter. Don't be fooled by the simple housing -- as we are all taught not to judge a book by its cover and you will find this tweeter performs as good or better than many fancier looking counterparts. We stuck with the Sundown mentality of not spending money where it doesn't increase performance. The crossover is also relatively simple looking at first glance but it does the job perfectly. It is a 12 dB network centered at 3800 Hz with high quality air core inductors and Mylar capacitors. It also features the ability to change the LPF on the mid from a 12dB, to 6dB, to a bypassed slope as well as to adjust the tweeter from 0, to -3, to -6 dB levels. We are confident that anyone who is after a smooth sounding set will be incredibly pleased with the SA component line. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive on them from all over the globe. If you are a metal or hard dome tweeter fan it may not be your set but we will develop a "sharper" sounding set down the line! The Z v.6 is the second step up in Sundown's "ultra-high excursion" subwoofer lineup after the X v.3 series and replaces the world-famous Z v.5 series. All models (10,12,15,18) feature our custom tooled and patented frames (US Patent Numbers D691596, D691597, D691598, and D741841). Sundown mates these new platform frames to a quad stacked 240mm (9.45”) diameter motor structure with a total magnet stack height of 100mm (3.94”) featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing over 4" p-p travel before mechanical bottom effectively making it bottomless). The Z v.7 is the third step up in Sundown's 2025 "ultra-high excursion" sub-woofer lineup after the M and X v.4 series. All models (12,15,18) feature our custom tooled and patented frames (US Patent Numbers D691597, D691598, and D741841) – the Sundown “mega-platform.” Please note – the Z v.7 is not available, aside from special orders, in 10s due to the motor size. We mate these new platform frames to a quad stacked 265mm (10.43”) diameter motor structure with a total magnet stack height of 100mm (3.94”) featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing over 4" p-p travel before mechanical bottom effectively making it bottomless). This is, by far, the largest motor we have ever produced on a Z series sub-woofer. The motor force factor (BL^2/RE) is ~50% higher than the previous generation Z v.6 series. This motor drives a 3.3" diameter 4-Layer Round Wire Aluminum Voice Coil wound on a thick aluminum former. These new round wire coils use a special Sundown designed “fat wire” winding method to handle significant amounts of power and abuse. Based on Sundown's years of experience with the Z v.4, 5, and 6 series we've also improved the voice coil ventilation yet again. The Z v.7 features an entirely new and patent-pending airflow directing pole cap, six pole OD channels, SIXTEEN gap vents, and a cross-drilled / slotted top plate to keep the voice coil running cool under extreme conditions.The Z v.7 motor also features a 9mm thick magnet ID Faraday ring which is locked into both the top and back plates.
