Sundown Audio Sundown Audio U-Series v.1 12" Subwoofer
The Sundown U Series is our premier “standard suspension” woofer series. It is the most direct replacement for the world famous Z v.3 woofer line which we produced from 2011 to 2016 before launching the “new platform” Z v.4 series. Due to numerous advancements in our design process the U Series is able to deliver performance on-par with the Z v.3 series but at a much lower cost. We start with a double-stacked / 8.66” wide Y35 grade ferrite magnet system coupled to a one-piece, bumped T-Yoke and a 0.6” thick top-plate. Just as with the Z v.3 before it and our other high-end subwoofers we also add a very thick (5mm thickness) aluminum shorting ring inside the magnets to reduce static inductance and level out inductance over stroke. The U series motor also features a 0.6” long pole-extension to keep the coil under control at high levels of excursion. The voice coil is a 2.36” long / 3” diameter 4-layer aluminum winding / aluminum former unit – which is the same coil we use in our X v.2 series and, thus, the U series has the same 1500-watt RMS ratings. The coil temperature is kept in check by a heavily smoothed / high-velocity pole-vent and a series of ten direct air-gap vents in the back plate. The U series also features newly tooled cast aluminum vent rings in between the frame and top plate to effectively exchange air at a high velocity over the voice coil beneath the spider landing. The U series features an all-new cast aluminum frame series to the Sundown line which allows for taller cones than the older frames used on the Z v.3 series. The taller cones provide enhanced coil stability and increased mechanical excursion capability. We also tooled matching cast-aluminum surround clamps for the U series to ensure durability in the most demanding situations. The surrounds and cone bodies have been fully custom tooled especially for the U series and are stronger / support more excursion than the Z v.3 series cones and surrounds. The new cone bodies also feature an indentation for the same wide-flange, ultra-strong dust caps as our new platform subwoofers. If you are looking for a woofer that sounds similar to the SA series but handles significantly more power… the U series is exactly what you need. The Z v.7 is the third step up in Sundown's 2025 "ultra-high excursion" sub-woofer lineup after the M and X v.4 series. All models (12,15,18) feature our custom tooled and patented frames (US Patent Numbers D691597, D691598, and D741841) – the Sundown “mega-platform.” Please note – the Z v.7 is not available, aside from special orders, in 10s due to the motor size.We mate these new platform frames to a quad stacked 265mm (10.43”) diameter motor structure with a total magnet stack height of 100mm (3.94”) featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing over 4" p-p travel before mechanical bottom effectively making it bottomless). This is, by far, the largest motor we have ever produced on a Z series sub-woofer. The motor force factor (BL^2/RE) is ~50% higher than the previous generation Z v.6 series.This motor drives a 3.3" diameter 4-Layer Round Wire Aluminum Voice Coil wound on a thick aluminum former. These new round wire coils use a special Sundown designed “fat wire” winding method to handle significant amounts of power and abuse.Based on Sundown's years of experience with the Z v.4, 5, and 6 series we've also improved the voice coil ventilation yet again. The Z v.7 features an entirely new and patent-pending airflow directing pole cap, six pole OD channels, SIXTEEN gap vents, and a cross-drilled / slotted top plate to keep the voice coil running cool under extreme conditions.The Z v.7 motor also features a 9mm thick magnet ID Faraday ring which is locked into both the top and back plates. We stuck with the 2.75” coil diameter and added another 5mm of length for additional linear x-max (22mm now). We are able to perfectly balance the mass, motor force, and suspension stiffness for the intended power level. Compared to the v.2 the v.3 features taller cones and wider spiders to enhanced linearity and coil stability to the next level. We also utilized full 3D FEA to further optimize the spider packs for this generation. The motor also features a large magnet shorting ring (faraday ring) & pole cap faraday ring to reduce distortion and deliver smoother response across the entire acoustic spectrum. The all-new 2025 Sundown SA speaker series has been designed to make a statement. What statement, you may ask? That Sundown Audio can be just as serious about SQ as we are about SPL. Many people already know this but our subwoofers – even the ones used for crushing demos – have some of the lowest distortion on the market. We are now bringing our unique approach to the more dedicated Sound Quality market.Starting at the upper end of the frequency spectrum we have the SA-1T Tweeter. The SA-1T features a 25.5mm silk dome (total 38mm including surround) driven by a powerful neodymium motor structure. The dome features a compact, tuned back chamber which helps it to achieve its extremely low FS around 700hz. This gives you an enormous amount of flexibility in choosing the crossover. The tweeter can be used as a 2-way with the 6.5M or the 8M models or as part of a three way with either and the 3M model. In addition to the low FS and smooth response the SA-1T has a very high 92dB sensitivity so it doesn't take much power to get loud enough for just about anyone. The SA-1T is the 4th generation SA tweeter building on the success of the tweeter found in the SA Component sets over three generations.Headed down the spectrum to the midrange we have the SA-3M. This "little" unit is something incredibly special and is a favorite project of lead product designer / founder Jacob Fuller. We really went all-out on this unit to address the "big 3" drivers of distortion. The SA-3M features 4.5mm of one-way linear excursion by 70% BL (with 8mm x-mech thanks to the custom tooled frame – so no bottoming out even on powerful dynamics) and over 6mm by CMS and LE definitions on Klippel. There is essentially NO risk of the driver reaching linearity limits in most applications. The beefy motor structure is a combination of ferrite and a neodymium pole cap magnet to help us reach 84.5dB sensitivity at 1-watt. There is a double LE treatment internal to the motor via both a copper pole sleeve and an aluminum magnet ID shorting ring allowing the SA-3M to play full-range to beyond 20khz (although, for several reasons, we do suggest using a tweeter for the top-end). On the bottom end they can be high-pass crossed over at 300hz effortlessly with 150-watts of power handling (thanks to the 28mm diameter, extra-long voice coil) or even lower if needed, with less power, due to the incredibly high linear stroke. The suspension system, surround and spider, of the SA-3M took over a year of FEA simulations and testing to reach perfection and is just as important as the motor to the resulting low distortion. We gave the suspension just as much attention as we would for a full blown high-stroke subwoofer. To finish off this masterpiece we tested several different types of woven carbon fiber cones & dust caps to achieve the best FR possible.To finish off the 2025 SA speaker line we created the SA-6.5M and the SA-8M. Both of which can be used as a mid-bass or mid-range speaker depending on your application. Both drivers feature the same attention to detail as the 3M regarding the carbon cone and dust cap, surround, and spider. All of these parts were fully FEA simulated and Klippel verified.The SA-6.5M features 5.9mm one-way linear excursion by 70% BL, 7mm by CMS, and 6.28mm by LE on Klippel. Thanks to the efficient motor venting and ample voice coil the power handling is rated for 110-watts full range / 200-watts with a 70hz HPF filter with a respectable 89dB sensitivity. As with the SA-1T this is a 4th generation SA speaker due to the SA component set from prior generations. For this iteration we optimized it further and also created a new custom-tooled frame. The revised frame is more aerodynamics and also allows for superior coil ventilation. As with most Sundown products you will find a thick magnet-ID Faraday ring as well.Last, but absolutely not least, we have the SA-8M which takes linear stroke to yet another level. We were able to achieve 9mm one-way linear by 70% BL and nearly 10mm by CMS and LE standards. As with the 3M, the 8M features a pole sleeve and magnet ID faraday ring for LE treatment. This unit is an absolute powerhouse for mid-bass, and we believe it will make big waves in the SQ world. On the output side it has a 91.5dB sensitivity and will handle 130-watts full-range / 250-watts with a 70Hz HPF thanks to the efficient motor venting and huge 2" coil. Going along with the budget friendly trends in the industry, We decided it was time to play along. Introducing the “Sundown Full Bridge” line of amplifiers, “SFB” for short. These amps pack a huge punch in a fairly small footprint. Due to the full bridge technology, these amplifiers are not strappable however you can line up multiple amps together to create a massive powerhouse in the same, if not smaller, footprint of your standard half bridge predecessors for a fraction of the cost. All of the SFB 4ch amp’s power ratings are listed at the 1ohm rating. For instance, the SFB-500.4 is 500Wrms at 1ohm per channel. This allows you to run many more speakers together in a multitude of different wiring configurations than using a standard Class A/B/D half bridge design. These are the perfect amplifiers for large systems where you have a plethora of pro drivers in multiple doors or line arrays. All SFB mono amplifiers are full range. Sundown Audio Sundown Audio U-Series v.1 10" Subwoofer
The Sundown U Series is our premier “standard suspension” woofer series. It is the most direct replacement for the world famous Z v.3 woofer line which we produced from 2011 to 2016 before launching the “new platform” Z v.4 series. Due to numerous advancements in our design process the U Series is able to deliver performance on-par with the Z v.3 series but at a much lower cost. We start with a double-stacked / 8.66” wide Y35 grade ferrite magnet system coupled to a one-piece, bumped T-Yoke and a 0.6” thick top-plate. Just as with the Z v.3 before it and our other high-end subwoofers we also add a very thick (5mm thickness) aluminum shorting ring inside the magnets to reduce static inductance and level out inductance over stroke. The U series motor also features a 0.6” long pole-extension to keep the coil under control at high levels of excursion. The voice coil is a 2.36” long / 3” diameter 4-layer aluminum winding / aluminum former unit – which is the same coil we use in our X v.2 series and, thus, the U series has the same 1500-watt RMS ratings. The coil temperature is kept in check by a heavily smoothed / high-velocity pole-vent and a series of ten direct air-gap vents in the back plate. The U series also features newly tooled cast aluminum vent rings in between the frame and top plate to effectively exchange air at a high velocity over the voice coil beneath the spider landing. The U series features an all-new cast aluminum frame series to the Sundown line which allows for taller cones than the older frames used on the Z v.3 series. The taller cones provide enhanced coil stability and increased mechanical excursion capability. We also tooled matching cast-aluminum surround clamps for the U series to ensure durability in the most demanding situations. The surrounds and cone bodies have been fully custom tooled especially for the U series and are stronger / support more excursion than the Z v.3 series cones and surrounds. The new cone bodies also feature an indentation for the same wide-flange, ultra-strong dust caps as our new platform subwoofers. If you are looking for a woofer that sounds similar to the SA series but handles significantly more power… the U series is exactly what you need.
