Sundown Audio Z-Series ZV6 18" 3250W Subwoofer Z v.6
The Z v.6 is the second step up in Sundown's "ultra-high excursion" subwoofer lineup after the X v.3 series and replaces the world-famous Z v.5 series. All models (10,12,15,18) feature our custom tooled and patented frames (US Patent Numbers D691596, D691597, D691598, and D741841). Sundown mates these new platform frames to a quad stacked 240mm (9.45”) diameter motor structure with a total magnet stack height of 100mm (3.94”) featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing over 4" p-p travel before mechanical bottom effectively making it bottomless). Compared to the X v.3 motor both the top & back plates are thicker allowing for even more magnetic strength and excursion potential. For the Z v.6 the top plate is another 5mm thicker than even the outgoing Z v.5 series! This motor drives a 3" diameter 8-Layer Flat Wire Aluminum Voice Coil wound on a thick aluminum former to incredible levels of excursion. The Z v.6 now uses the same voice coil as the NS v.5 series. The Z v.5 utilized a 4-layer voice coil – the change to an 8-layer was to answer our customers desire for higher motor force (more output) and it does just that! Based on Sundown's years of experience with the Z v.4 and Z v.5 series we've also improved the voice coil ventilation to be even more effective. The Z v.6 features a high-velocity pole vent, a heavily vented magnetic gap, and (all new for the v.6) machined channels in four places around the pole piece itself. The Z v.6 series was designed from the ground-up to become the new standard in the low-frequency / small ported box subwoofer category in this price range. They will work in the same small enclosures that are commonly used for for Sundown Audio's subwoofers, although, they can be used with enclosures up to about 50% larger than those if you desire even more low-end extension. The Z v.6 series is really a different kind of woofer due to its incredibly linear suspension. They are designed for the LOWEST level of bass extension possible in a small enclosure while maintaining extremely low levels of distortion. Design Our philosophy with The Bass Blaster was to recreate the feel of car audio from our youth. The blue surround is not just our branding color, it is an homage to woofers of the 1990s that used brightly colored surrounds as a signature look. The balance of the blue to the grey/silver basket and cone harkens back to the early 2000s when some of our favorite woofer models sported a distinct style. The aluminum dust cap gives depth and texture to the woofer as a whole and adds rigid reinforcement to the cone body. The genesis of the design was the motor itself, the large vent for the four-inch coil caught our eye in car audio shops in the 1990s. Jacob Fuller captured that look while tapering the vent and adding a pole cap so as to not compromise modern cooling techniques for the best performance-to-aesthetics ratio possible. Sundown Audio Z-Series ZV7 18" Subwoofer
The Z v.7 is the third step up in Sundown's 2025 "ultra-high excursion" sub-woofer lineup after the M and X v.4 series. All models (12,15,18) feature our custom tooled and patented frames (US Patent Numbers D691597, D691598, and D741841) – the Sundown “mega-platform.” Please note – the Z v.7 is not available, aside from special orders, in 10s due to the motor size. We mate these new platform frames to a quad stacked 265mm (10.43”) diameter motor structure with a total magnet stack height of 100mm (3.94”) featuring a hyper-extended pole and extreme clearances (allowing over 4" p-p travel before mechanical bottom effectively making it bottomless). This is, by far, the largest motor we have ever produced on a Z series sub-woofer. The motor force factor (BL^2/RE) is ~50% higher than the previous generation Z v.6 series. This motor drives a 3.3" diameter 4-Layer Round Wire Aluminum Voice Coil wound on a thick aluminum former. These new round wire coils use a special Sundown designed “fat wire” winding method to handle significant amounts of power and abuse. Based on Sundown's years of experience with the Z v.4, 5, and 6 series we've also improved the voice coil ventilation yet again. The Z v.7 features an entirely new and patent-pending airflow directing pole cap, six pole OD channels, SIXTEEN gap vents, and a cross-drilled / slotted top plate to keep the voice coil running cool under extreme conditions.The Z v.7 motor also features a 9mm thick magnet ID Faraday ring which is locked into both the top and back plates. This ring combined with an all-new pole-extension inductance sleeve gives the Z v.7 the most linear inductive performance of any mega-platform sub-woofer to date. As if all of this were not enough to cement the Z v.7as a legend... we were also able to achieve 42mm of one-way linear excursion by 70% BL with an extremely uniform curve via our extensively FEA optimized motor and 95mm long voice-coil winding length. The Z v.7 series was designed from the ground-up to become the new standard in the low-frequency / small, ported box sub-woofer category in this price range. They will work in the same enclosures that are commonly used for Sundown Audio's mega-platform sub-woofers. *Death Penalty Series Subwoofers are built to order, expect a 14-21 day build time* Description The 2013 Death Penalty was designed to be the ultimate ground-pounder subwoofer. Vehicles that are designed to be high powered sub-bass machines (ground-pounders) have requirements that are a bit different than both standard daily driven vehicles and SPL vehicles. They require a subwoofer that can handle extreme amounts of power for long periods of time, both thermally and mechanically, and must be able to do this time and time again. Three years ago we introduced our Death Penalty with the S.T.A.R. (Six Tier Axis Radical Cooling) motor design with the concept of rapidly cooling the coil by pushing more air with our Air-Driven Cooling, the solution was radical, but the results were remarkable, as the coil last even longer while performing even harder. The 2013 model goal was to engineer the motor with a traditional look, but keep the S.T.A.R. design and we did just that. The newest version of S.T.A.R. has a traditional top and bottom plate, but adds a seventh magnet wedge for even more motor force over an even larger gap. This has increased the usable X-max of the subwoofer in combination with a longer voice coil assembly. We’ve increased the motor to a 9.25” diameter for extra motor strength, as well as increased motor gap vent cooling with Air-Driven Cooling (ADC) and supplemental rear side vents. The pole vent has a dome shaped top just above the pole to allow air to be pushed out the S.T.A.R. designed side and rear vents on the cones downward stroke. Just under the dome the pole has six machined cooling vents to allow air to be pulled into the gap and the process repeats with the concept of exchanging air as fast as possible, keep fresh cooling air around the coil at all times. The motor is then covered with our custom tooled magnet boot to give the driver a uniform look. To reduce mechanical fatigue and to maintain linear cone movement throughout the stroke a multiple layer suspension is utilized. The dual lead wires are sewn to the suspension pack in order to both eliminate noises from the lead slapping the cone, and to reduce movement of the leads which can cause them to break. The final touch is our new two-tone red and silver oversize DP skull on the front dustcap.
